One of the things I use is to acknowledge that however painful, my experience gave me a perception and perspective I would not have otherwise.
I usually can be grateful for the person I am and no longer mourn the person I might have been. My experience hasn't been nearly as difficult as yours. When you saw the illness of the trees it seemed as though you identified with them in a unique way born out of your illness.
